Its landscapes are dotted with palaces, manor houses, and meticulously landscaped gardens that highlight the coexistence of nature and human creativity.

We start the day with a short ferry ride across the pristine Mira River, Our hike takes us southward, passing small fishing harbors, agricultural fields, and sand dunes, before reaching the dramatic Cabo Sardão cape, where storks build their nests high on the cliffs above the Atlantic. The highlight of today’s hike is the breathtaking view from Ponta em Branco (White Summit), overlooking the stunning Odeceixe beach at the Seixe River delta. This spot marks the natural border between the Alentejo and Algarve regions. Take Note: Activity Level 2 or 3.5 out of 5
This trip is rated Easy [2 out of 5] for the standard walks, with the option to elevate it to Moderate Plus [3.5 out of 5] by tackling the extended portions of the hikes. The first three days combine cultural experiences with hiking, while the last three days focus on exploring nature through more extensive hikes.
Easy [2 out of 5]: Participants should be comfortable walking up to 3 hours (up to 6 kms/4 miles) on consecutive days. Trails may feature loose dirt, rocks, sand, and uneven stone stairs of varying heights, with minimal elevation changes throughout.
Moderate [3.5 out of 5]: During the last three days of the tour you will have the opportunity to have full days of hiking by doing the optional extensions to the hikes. If you do the extensions expect to hike for 4–6 hours with distances up to 16kms/10 miles. You will hike across varied terrain, including forest trails, grassy paths, dirt tracks, and sandy beaches. There will also be uneven, rocky, steep, and hilly sections, some of which may have exposed areas. Hiking in sand can be more strenuous than you think, so being in good physical shape will enhance your enjoyment of the stunning Portuguese coast and its rugged beauty!
Flat to gently rolling terrain with some rocky areas. Some short, relatively steep climbs and descents, but nothing longer than 20 minutes. It is important to note there will be uneven, rocky, steep and/or hilly sections, and some trail sections have areas of exposure. Hiking in sand is more strenuous than hiking on dirt trails; likewise, hiking in very warm weather can make the hills feel more strenuous.
Between 4 - 6 hours per day, mostly in the morning but sometimes also in the afternoon
Usually 7 - 14 km (4.5 - 8 mi). Max distance is 16 km (11 mi) on the optional Day 5 hike
Trails consist mainly of compact earth and/or gravel and sometimes gravel roads. It is important to note that there will be uneven, rocky, steep and/or hilly sections, and some trail sections have areas of exposure
Easy/good. Proper hiking shoes with thick soles with good treads are required. Sport sandals, running shoes and tennis shoes are not adequate.
Not required, but if you habitually use hiking poles then you will find them helpful
This tour is appropriate for fit, first-time “hikers” who enjoy hiking Easy to Moderate Tours: Puglia & Basilicata, Piedmont Hike and Portugal Easy Camino de Santiago Hike. All of our boat–based tours in Turkey, Croatia, and Greece Dodecanese Islands would be “easy to moderate” IF you decide to skip the one or two of the more challenging hikes. Your guides of course can advise you of the difficulty level and the terrain and footing of each hike
Puglia & Basilicata, Piedmont Walk and Portugal Camino. All of our boat–based tours in Turkey, Croatia, and Greece Dodecanese Islands would be “easy to moderate” IF you decide to skip the one or two of the more challenging hikes. Note: on our boat-based tours we usually do a walk in the morning, return to the boat for a swim and then lunch, then cruise, and then occasionally drop off for late afternoon hike. Your guides of course can advise you of the difficulty level and the terrain and footing of each walk
This tour is significantly easier than the hikes in the Cinque Terre
A 1 out of 5 rated tour is a tour without any hiking. Walks would be in towns, cities, and villages, and the countryside walks would be on paved, or gravel/dirt roads, and occasionally on some packed earth trails. Elevation gain and loss would be negligible
A 5 out of 5 rated tour is a tour that would be physically challenging and technically difficult even for very fit and experienced hikers. The hikes would have steep ascents and descents on narrow, exposed trails with challenging footing, such as on scree fields, or through rock falls and boulders. Distances would be up to 25 km/16 miles per day and feature ascents of over 1,000 m/3,200 feet in a day. A 5 out of 5 tour would also mean that you would be carrying a heavier-than-normal pack. None of our tours are rated 5 out 5. Our most challenging tours are 4.5 out of 5, and they are the Dolomites Alta Via (because of some exposed trail that requires some technical expertise) and our Republic of Georgia tour which has some long hikes with over 1,000 meters of elevation gain
